  5. 1507: I suppose I'll shotgun some ideas, simply in the interest of maybe inspiring somebody else to make the correct guess:
    The width at 9.5" certainly rules out ballot box or shoe shine, as the slot there is certainly only big enough for coins or razors, and 9.5" is simply too small to place your feet upon.

    Now the handle/button to the side of the coin slot leads me to believe that it's some sort of coin-operated lock of sorts, like used in English public loos. You put the coin in, push the button and pull the handle, door opens.

    The only problem with that hypothesis are the feet on the bottom of the box!
    I suppose they could be mounting bosses, though.

    Width of the box looks to be less than 4", and the height looks approximately the same. I doubt that it was vertical lengthwise because there are no protrusions of any kind on what would be the right-hand side of the device.

    In addition, should the button/knob be oriented at the top of a vertical configuration, the coin slot would be angled down and the Patent information print would be upside down.

    How odd.
